We specialise in working with anyone who is at risk of or has survived trauma, personally or vicariously through our one-to-one coaching. Work like this depends deeply on the relationship between coach and client so here is a little more about who we are and what we do.

Here at Gemma Louise Coaching we believe in the need to embed resilience as a preventative rather than a reactive aspect of positive personal and professional wellbeing and are committed to providing consultation and training to individuals and organisations aiming to achieve this.

We use the Grow Your Roots Model of resilience which was developed by our Owner and Founder Gemma Margerison, The Resilience and Recovery Coach. This is based on the idea that just as a plant needs strong and stable roots to survive and flourish, so do we need to be able to dig into our own sense of self and purpose, as well as our connections with the people and environment around us to live holistically healthy and resilient lives.

While prevention is better than cure, we understand that there may be situations in life that shake us to our very core and require extra support. This is where our one-to-one coaching comes in. Predominantly for those who have been through trauma, this coaching works as a complimentary post-counselling support service.

The recovery journey is deeply personal and individual however, here at Gemma Louise Coaching we believe in a positive solutionist approach, where coachees are encouraged and expected to take responsibility for their own growth and development, whilst we stand beside you for support and accountability. We believe nobody should walk alone and would love to work with you regardless of your stage in the recovery journey.

Gemma Louise Coaching is run by Gemma Margerison, The Resilience and Recovery Coach. Gemma’s diverse background of personal and professional experience combined with a unique combination of academic and private research, gives her a distinctive perspective on the topic of resilience, which is shown throughout her work.

After completing a BA (Hons) in Creative Writing and English Literature in 2009, Gemma spent the next three and a half years living and working in New Zealand as the Senior Reporter for a national newspaper. It was here Gemma was able to combine her love of story and sharing good news with her interests in humanitarian aid and charity.

On return to the UK in 2013 Gemma began working for the local council where she supported several training, apprenticeship and work experience programmes, including working with former military personnel. Her interest in veteran wellbeing led her to undertake a basic counselling qualification whilst doing additional research for the local Armed Forces Covenant. Gemma still works very closely with the military community including serving personnel, veterans and spouses.

Combining her interests in trauma and conflict with studying, Gemma began an MA in International Relations in 2014, and wrote her dissertation on the reintegration of former child soldiers in Africa, which heavily featured mental health and wellbeing. During this period Gemma was diagnosed with mild Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and made the decision to concentrate on her recovery and study whilst doing roles within student support and a local police constabulary.

After graduating Gemma became the Learner Engagement and Wellbeing Co-ordinator for a global engineering company, providing training around Safeguarding, Wellbeing and Resilience to apprentices and graduates up and down the country. Gemma left this role in 2020 to set up Gemma Louise Coaching and has been full time self-employed ever since.

Now working towards a Doctorate in Coaching and Mentoring Gemma continues to use her own experiences to the benefit of others and hopes to complete her thesis around resilience as a recovery tool for trauma. Gemma lives in Standish, Wigan with her partner Scott and a Yorkshire Terrier called Taz.
